Liane Moriarty has become a staple in contemporary fiction. With bestselling titles like "Big Little Lies" and "The Husband's Secret," she has a knack for creating complex characters and gripping narratives.
What would you do if you knew when and how you were going to die?
In her latest release, "Here One Moment," Moriarty invites readers to examine the intricacies of life and love, by focusing on one of our deepest fears, death.
It's a novel that keeps you thinking long after you've turned the last page.
A Brief Overview
"Here One Moment" tells the story of ordinary people, on an ordinary short-haul flight from Hobart to Sydney, but what happens on this flight will change them and tie them together. A mysterious woman informs the passengers when and how they will die. For some the death date is decades away, for others it's just months. Heart failure. Cancer. Drowning. Assault. Suicide. The strange conversations, initially brushed off as quirky, become serious, when the so-called "Death Lady" makes predictions which come true. This sets off a frenzy.
Characters That Feel Real
The novel focuses on six lives connected by the flight and impacted by the unwanted predictions. A beautiful young flight attendant, an overworked father, a new bride, a loving mother, a young man on the cusp of his 30th birthday, and the "Death Lady" herself. Set in Australia, like all of her novels, Moriarty places her characters against the beautiful backdrop of her home country.
If you were told you only had a short time left to live, would you accept your fate or try to change your destiny?
Moriarty creates a vivid world seen through the eyes of her characters, which has you questioning the idea of a predestined future. As a reader I was immersed in these normal, yet exceptional lives. Moriarty builds her characters by developing lengthy backstories. It can slow the pace of reading, but it also ties the reader more intimately to the story. I felt I was experiencing the characters fears firsthand.
A Read for Everyone
In a modern society, which values personal freedom and self-determination, the novel questions the idea of destiny versus freewill. How does our history shape our future? Are there greater powers at play?
This is a novel that is difficult to put down. Moriarty wraps the reader in an emotional and suspenseful cocoon, and you don't want to leave.
Happy reading!
